Kekkilä-BVB is committed to a new peat alternative

International potting soil and substrate manufacturer Kekkilä-BVB is investing more in peat alternatives. Not only in known alternatives, but also in a new one.

The new alternative is Sphagnum. Kekkilä-BVB will now mainly focus on three alternatives: coconut, wood fiber and Sphagnum. ’So far, we are the only company that has started working with Sphagnum as part of potting soil’, says nursery specialist Bram van Bommel from BVB, but according to him peat alternatives are a challenge to the whole industry.

Less peat in potting soil: for years it has been a requirement from retail buyers. But now, it seems to be legally required in European countries. Van Bommel: ’We don’t want to wait for this, therefore we invest more in alternatives.’
