The war in Ukraine is still raging, and there is unrest in various parts of the world. In Sri Lanka, the people overthrew the government for want of food. Horticultural countries are also affected by insurrections: Ecuador saw eighteen days of unrest due to rising fuel prices, with growers unable to take their flowers to the airport and farm hands being intimidated.
In The Netherlands, farmers are protesting the government’s environmental policy measures, fearing that the strict nitrogen deposition standards will leave them no future. And then there is the huge shortage of labour, which not only affects Schiphol Airport; also at the auctions in The Netherlands and in Herongen, Germany, it is all hands on deck to get the plants and flowers to the customers on time.
