‘Our family comes first’

Pieter Moerman and his wife Ilona emigrated to Australia at the end of 2006. They built a professional, 2,000-m2 greenhouse and started growing cut anthuriums. Owning a company isn’t everything to him though. “We just want to have a nice life.”

Pieter Moerman built a greenhouse with 4-metre post height, continuous roof ventilation fitted with insect mesh and a cultivation system that he designed himself, consisting of racks holding containers filled with perlite.

Cut anthuriums weren’t new to him. He had fifteen years of experience from working with his parents, who grew 8,800 m2 of anthurium in ‘s-Gravenzande. Within Moerman Anthurium, he also developed more than ten new varieties, which he took with him to Australia.

    Rules and regulations

“Our family business was bought out in 2005 after a tough, five-year long process. It strengthened my desire to move to a country with fewer rules and regulations. A country outside of Europe with good amenities and opportunities. It also had to be a country with a climate that’s suitable for cut anthuriums. I felt that my work on the new cultivars wasn’t done yet.” (..)
