Een sierpeer waarvan in de Verenigde Staten miljoenen bomen zijn aangeplant, gedraagt zich daar nu invasief.
The Washington Post legt in een artikel uit ’hoe we de Bradford-peer hebben veranderd in een monster’. Het gaat om Pyrus calleryana ’Bradford’, die vroeger in Amerika werd gezien als ’perfect bloeiende sierpeer’. Gevolg was dat er tussen 1970 en 1990 miljoenen zijn aangeplant, langs straten, in parken en plantsoenen.
Intussen is het ras zich ongestoord gaan uitbreiden; in 29 Amerikaanse staten staat ’Bradford’ nu te boek als ’invasief’.
