Thankfully, things have quieted down in Ecuador, but during the eighteen days of insurrection, it was a hot topic again: ‘La ley del más vivo’. This loosely translates as ‘The rule of the smartest’. Not smart in a good way, but rather self-interest at the expense of society. Obviously, this pertains primarily to financial benefits, but it may also include practical benefits. It seems to be an integral part of the culture and can be encountered in all walks of life. Moreover, the devious person concerned is always proud of their cunning and not in the least ashamed of it.
