Er is een boek verschenen met het levensverhaal van Nederlandse emigranten die in Canada een boomkwekerij begonnen.
Het boek is getiteld ’Jaap & Emmy’ en gaat over Jack en Emma Manten. Het boek beschrijft hun leven in Nederland voordat ze, in 1923 vanuit Nieuw-Loosdrecht, naar Brits-Columbia emigreerden om Manten’s Nursery op te zetten.
De Canadese boomkwekerij heeft veel zaken gedaan met kwekerijen uit Boskoop en Tegelen, laat Grace van Voorden weten die samen met Eric Stathers het boek heeft geschreven. Manten was haar oom en de grootvader van Stathers.
Manten’s Nursery was succesvol in Canada. Het bedrijf beleverde onder andere telers van fruit en noten, tuinen, parken en andere Canadese kwekerijen. Manten ontwikkelde ook nieuw sortiment, waaronder een dwergappel en Daphne die naar de kweker is vernoemd: Daphne x mantensiana en de cultivar ’Manten’. Daarnaast was de geëmigreerde Nederlander actief in onderzoek en onderwijs, aan de Universiteit van Brits-Columbia.

In Brits-Columbia, maar ook in Ontario, zijn meerdere boomkwekerijen ooit gestart door Nederlandse emigranten.
