‘Our added value is that we have our own farms’

Flamingo Flowers has been supplying to Tesco for 20 years. And as one of the recent Tesco tender winners, they’re going to supply 50% more plants and flowers to the retailer over the coming years. The company has its own farms, which Tesco considers an added value. However, says Bas Rensen, “we’ll definitely need flowers from the Netherlands as well.”

Flamingo Flowers set up an office and distribution facility in the Netherlands sixteen years ago. This year, all eyes are on them. They are one of two companies who won the Tesco tender. “An intensive journey”, is how Bas Rensen describes the process as he welcomes me into his office in Honselersdijk. Their new logo adorns the wall, with purple leaves symbolising their own flower and vegetable production. It was this organisational structure in particular, that appealed to Tesco.

An 18-month tender process. How did you experience this?

“We’d already been supplying Tesco with flowers and vegetables from our own farms and partner growers for 20 years, when Tesco announced they wanted to go back from three to two suppliers. This had to do with vertical integration, partnership for the future, consumer data and innovation. When you take part in a tender process like this, you want to win it of course. Tesco is a big customer for us. We respect our competitors, but we also support the direction that Tesco wants to follow.” (..)
