Plant health: majority of EU budget goes to Xylella

This year the European Commission will allocate millions of euros for the survey of plant pests. The greatest part of these funds are going towards the fight against Xylella.

The total budget for the plant health area is more than €13 million: for the survey of 62 programs that run already for eradiction, control and surveillance of plant diseases. Most important program is the Xylella program. The quarantine bacterium is regarded as one of the most dangerous plant pests in the world.

In the case of an outbreak in an EU member state, it can apply for the budget to control the outbreak and prevent further spreading of Xylella.
