‘Big data allows for smarter an faster breeding’

The latest developments in ornamental breeding, both in terms of technology and insight, get a personal touch at Dümmen Orange, thanks to the cut-flower and pot-plant breeder’s new Breeding Technology Centre in the Dutch town of De Lier. “There’s still a wealth of new traits to discover within the floriculture sector”, according to research director Tosca Ferber.

Dümmen Orange’s Breeding Technology Centre (BTC) in De Lier is one of the largest and most advanced laboratories for ornamental research in the world. The research programme focuses on characteristics that add value to the chain. Priorities and the exact properties that are targeted, differ from crop to crop.

Dümmen Orange draws up a profile for each crop, which forms the basis for the strategic plan, explains Tosca Ferber. They distinguish between disruptive traits and complex commercial traits. If possible and desirable, both are combined.
