Colombian chrysanthemum acreage increasing rapidly

Chrysanthemum is hot in Colombia. The recent ‘Semana del Crisantemo’ – open days organised by breeders – attracted more visitors than expected. According to insiders, the current trend is ‘vintage’ – flowers in pastel colours. Large producer Capiro has vastly increased its chrysanthemum production.

Chrysanthemum Week, held in a Colombian region near Medellin, has become a recurring event over the years. Participants organise open days to show new varieties. This allows visitors to see the products for themselves, ask questions regarding productivity or disease resistance for example, and perhaps, sign a contract. This year’s edition was a hybrid physical/virtual event.

Initiators Dümmen Orange and Deliflor told us more about the event; how it developed into the current format and what the latest trends are. Back in 2015, both companies happened to organise their open days in the same week (35). There was so much interest that the two decided to join forces and invite other breeders to participate as well. This has brought the total number of participants to ten so far. This year, Deliflor and Dümmen Orange were joined by Danziger, Icon, Ball, Dekker, Progency, Selecta, Royal van Zanten and Floritec.(..)
