Flower fair Expoflor in Quito, Ecuador, is a nice gauge of the state of the sector in the Andean country. It also presents a picture of international relations in the flower industry. Despite the war in Ukraine and prolonged domestic unrest this year, the mood in Ecuador is positive. This is partly because market demand for flowers is shifting from the Netherlands to South America in particular, alongside other countries.
Presenting a positive image at a trade fair is part of the job. After all, who doesn’t want to stress that things are going well or their flowers are the best? The flower fair Expoflor by trade organisation Expoflores has real reason to be satisfied though: after four years of forced standstill – two years ago, the pandemic threw a spanner in the works – there is a kind of relief that the fair can be held again, and there is mostly positive news to report (..)
