First post-pandemic trade fair held in Benelux well attended

After two years of postponements and cancellations, the first post-pandemic floriculture trade fair of the Benelux recently took place in Waregem expo. Exhibitors and visitors were very much ready for some networking at Florall. The fact that the market has been thriving since Covid-19, lifted people’s spirits even more. Everyone seemed to agree that the current market conditions require buyers to order more and earlier.

A physical trade fair with exhibitors, visitors and living plants – it took some getting used to after the two-year break. Florall, a regional trade fair for ornamental plants and nursery stock products, was the first fair to take place since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The total fair grounds were somewhat reduced this year because part fo the building is still being used as a vaccination centre.

Just like at many previous editions, the first prize was won by tree grower Willy De Nolf from Waregem. Not that strange perhaps, when you realise that the company grows 1,700 varieties and introduces dozens of new plants, shrubs and trees each year. The callicarpa bodinieri ‘magical snowqueen’, a deciduous plant with white berries in winter, was the lucky one this time. The berries aren’t eaten by birds because they’re toxic.

    Very much ready

The exhibition floor may have been smaller, but the number of visitors was larger. Florall floriculture fair in the autumn of 2019 attracted 400 visitors, while the number of visitors at this edition was estimated at 500-600. “After almost two years without trade fairs and opportunities to meet colleagues, everyone was very much ready to physically meet each other again”, is how Miet Poppe, secretary of AVBS, Flanders’ federation for the green industry and organiser of the fair, described the atmosphere.
