Swedish florist Anna Hagdahl:

’The demand for plants is in the doldrums’

Are you specialised in contract work?
‘We have a lot of business customers that we deliver flowers and plants to for their events, happenings and their own interior. We also take care of a lot of weddings and funerals. This all takes place on the basis of orders and contracts. The usual dining room bouquets are not really our cup of tea. Passers-by don’t earn us our living.’

Are you running on full speed in summer?
‘We were closed for two weeks. We also need a break sometimes and a lot of business customers close their doors in summer or take things easier. We ran on full speed again as soon as our doors opened again. This period is busier than last year.’

What are your popular products at the moment?
‘We mostly sell cutting flowers at the moment, and roses, astrantia, eucalyptus and small summer flowers are the most popular now. The demand for plants is in the doldrums now because of the holidays and the warm weather. And if there’s demand, it’s just Phalaenopsis and cactuses the customer wants because they need little care and water. The demand for plants mostly increases again after summer.’

Is the consumption level the same?
‘It is regarding turnover. Although a lower volume leaves our doors, people spend more money on high-quality flowers and on fulfilling specific wishes.’

How do you buy your plants?
‘I buy online at the wholesaler’s. Almost all flowers come from the Netherlands and I am very satisfied with that. I buy most of my plants at local growers. I mainly buy my plants in spring and at the beginning of summer, for example the saintpaulia, pelargonium and hydrangea.’

Have you got a question or tips?
‘I would like to be able to purchase an extra service for flowers, so we can receive them all cut and with one third of the leaves removed. That would save us a lot of work and waste. I’m very satisfied with the service level though.’

Are you a satisfied entrepreneur?
‘I actually hope that I’ll never be a satisfied entrepreneur. By being a little unsatisfied at all times, I constantly challenge myself to improve things and look for new ways to work more efficiently and generate more profit.’
